Jerry has been an independent trainer, consultant and practitioner since 2001, working with more than 250 clients across the UK and beyond. He works across the Libraries, Culture, Heritage, Leisure, Customer Service and Education Sectors and contributes to work with adults, teenagers, children - and their parents and carers, and to programmes covering the full range of service provision.

Jerry provides on-site bespoke training and support across the following broad areas:

Advocacy in action; Behaviour & conflict management; Change management; Creating inspirational libraries; Cultural transformation; Customer service and customer care, including mystery shopping, in support of training and / or consultancy; Dealing positively with change; Effective floor walking and creating a customer-centred library; Leading, managing & supporting staff, including volunteers; Outcomes-based service planning, delivery & evaluation; Partnership working; Presentation skills & public speaking; Reader development, including reading groups; School class visits; School library self-evaluation; Service promotion, including the promotion of children’s & young people’s library services; Storytelling; Training-the-trainer; Transformational leadership; Whole-school reading for pleasure; Working with children & young people.

All of Jerry's work is geared towards helping clients in the process of service and staff development - supporting staff, including volunteers, during these challenging times. His on-site training addresses practical issues resulting from restructuring and changes in staff roles - focusing on developing staff confidence, skills and knowledge.

Jerry's training is bespoke to local requirements and he is also more than happy to devise new training courses for clients. His training delivers great results, is flexible, non-confrontational, enjoyable, memorable, highly participative and is rooted in the reality of day-to-day service delivery. Many courses are adaptable across sectors.

Jerry Hurst BA Hons (English & Philosophy), Dip Lib, MCLIP.

For The Reading Agency, Jerry has been a consultant / trainer for Participate and for HeadSpace, national programmes to develop engaging library spaces run in partnership between libraries and young volunteers, for the Chatterbooks children's reading groups programme, for Enjoying Reading in support of school / public library partnership and for Summer Reading Challenge. He has also been a consultant / trainer for Their Reading Futures, the library workforce development initiative.

Jerry has been a trainer for Creating Capacity, for the School Library Association, and for Renaissance East Midlands (Museums), and a Learning Consultant for Young Cultural Creators, the reader and writer development programme. He has also been a trainer for FPM Training, on the Leading Libraries leadership programme for Public Library Managers.

Prior to this Jerry was Head of Young People's Library Services in the London Borough of Southwark, and in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. He has also worked as a storyteller and as an occasional reviewer of children's books for publications including The Guardian. He has also appeared on BBC TV and radio and as a judge for the Branford Boase Award.
